About Us: My name is Caprice Samuel, wife, mom, teacher, and Owner of Build The Block LLC. When I graduated West Haven High school in 2003 I was prideful to have my diploma, and be headed to New York City for college. I jumped head first into debt! I wanted all the basics teenagers feel they’re entitled to. A Degree, a cell phone, a car, and a house. Looking back I think I may have been blinded by the idea of being an adult not fully considering all the logistics that come along with Adulthood. Optimistic and eager, I signed the loans for years without glancing twice at the fine print. A bad habit that followed me when purchasing my first cell phone and car. It was like, I was so happy to even be approved I didn’t ask what the interest rate meant for my financial future. Per the National Financial Educators Council, the average person spends 6 to 12 years in school but only 3% of the curriculum touches on financial literacy. A survey given by the council in 2016 proves 76% of Americans are living check to check and can look forward within the next 10-20 years to no social security or pension. Eventually finding out college would cost me and my parents $100,000 and that I was expected to budget, and pay back within 6 months following graduation was beyond a reality I was mentally, emotionally, and financially prepared for. To be 100% honest, looking back, I made almost every financial mistake in the book. Following college I was hired at a bank; the turning point in my life that soon shaped my financial mindset for the better. I learned all about the borrowing basics; APR, proper use of debit/credit cards, and home buying. These topics are beneficial or detrimental in reference to life choices if they are not understood. My passion to empower and equip youth with the financial tools to make savvy purchasing decisions grew while working with foster youth committed to the Department Of Children and Families. The youth often reported they “wing it” when it comes to spending and overall cash flow decisions. As a human service professional with a strong hands-on social work background, I confidently assert Money smart guidance is essential to the economic financial health of our future generations. The topics highlighted in Learning Objectives and Competencies are key areas teens should leave high school knowledgeable about leading to economic security and financial stability. Build The Block was born in August 2019. It is our essential aim to inspire, inform, and transform the lives of our clients for generations; Wisdom is Wealth.
